Doors and doorways have been symbolic across cultures for as long as history has been recorded. A door is both an entrance and an exit, so it has been associated with portals and passageways on many levels. On a metaphorical level, a door can become an entrance to nearly anything. Doors hold the essence of mystery. Potentially, anything might lie beyond the closed door.

Even if we see the door only as an entrance or exit, we are still going through a type of transition each time we enter or leave. Whether we realize it or not. We are faced with a choice when we face a closed door. We can accept the invitation to move forward, into change. Or, we can decline it based on something that turns us away.

Home buying trends in 2017

Bigger backyards and updated kitchens

Super-sized dream homes are not exactly what potential buyers are dreaming about this spring. But they are looking for bigger backyards, updated kitchens, and ranch-style homes, according to’s latest home buyer survey.

Features that buyers are looking for this spring (according to

  • Ranch-style homes led shoppers’ rankings of desired home styles with 42% of shoppers looking for a ranch home.
  • All age groups are looking for some combination of a backyard, garage and updated kitchen. Younger home buyers are particularly excited about finding a large yard and, and living in a good school district.
  • Privacy ranks as shoppers’ top goal for buying, largely driven by buyers over age 45.
  • 80% of shoppers ranked the kitchen as one of their three favorite rooms in a home, followed by master bedroom (49%) and living room (42%) among most age groups.
  • Shoppers over age 45 are looking to downsize, and cited planning for retirement as their primary motive for finding a new house.
  • Among younger buyers, many of whom are buying starter homes, 40% were looking for townhouses and row houses.
  • As shoppers age, however, that number declines and single-family homes are a clear preference. The older an age group is, the more likely they are to prefer a single-family home.

1. Look through a camera lens to determine if the curb appeal is going to need enhancing. Spend $50 on annuals so the first picture pops.
2. Check under sinks in baths and kitchen for clutter. Use baskets to contain any products.
3. Use Design Master floral tint to camouflage a brown grass spot on the lawn. Get it at Michaels.
4. Nature’s Miracle is a wonderful pet stain remover.
5. Cedar blocks will deodorize closets. Cedar shavings in a zippered dog bed will deodorize the dog and repeal fleas.
